Prediction of earplug attenuation based on impedance measurements in the ear canal

چکیده

The level of the attenuation is strongly affected by the amount of leakage. The leakage through an earplug is traditionally divided into three parts; sound propagation between the earplug and the ear canal wall, vibration of the earplug and sound propagation through the material. The last leakage path is usually much less efficient than the two others. Simple models of these leakage paths can be incorporated into an impedance analogy model of the transducers together with a model of the outer and middle ear to predict the attenuation of a badly inserted earplug. The measured impedance contains information about the length and area of the remaining part of the ear canal, the stiffness of the tympanic membrane, the middle ear and the cochlea. Some information about these quantities can be extracted from the impedance measurements.

Earplugs are a widespread solution to prevent the problem of hearing loss in the workplace environment, but they do not always perform as desired. Using a model of the ear canal occluded by an earplug could be helpful to perform sensitivity analyses (geometry and materials of the earplug) and to better understand the role of the earplug. The human external ear is a complex system made up of dif...

Measurement of earplugs insertion loss using a classical impedance tube

This work presents a new method for assessing the normal incidence insertion loss (IL) of earplug (EP) by the use of a classical impedance tube. The proposed technique allows for fast and straightforward IL measurements and thus is particularly suitable for earplug testing in a design phase. Indeed, compared to standard ATF measurements, the proposed method does not require cumbersome experimen...

Noise attenuation and proper insertion of earplugs into ear canals.

OBJECTIVES The study was done to determine whether the noise attenuation attained with the use of earplugs can be improved by teaching the proper insertion of earplugs to users. METHODS Fifty-four randomly selected male subjects were divided into an untrained group (25 persons) and a trained group (29 persons). The trained group was given a lecture on earplug insertion and allowed to practise...

Title : Real - world attenuation of custom - moulded earplugs : Results from industrial in situ F - MIRE measurements

The attenuation provided by hearing protection devices (HPDs) is traditionally determined under laboratory conditions by means of a standardised method titled REAT (Real Ear Attenuation at Threshold). This performance is often overestimated compared to what has been measured so far in industrial reality. Concerning the earmuff, the formable earplug and preformed earplug type of HPD, there are n...

Variability of real-world hearing protector attenuation measurements.

The attenuation provided by a hearing protection device (HPD) in the field is usually estimated by applying a derating factor to the laboratory-determined noise reduction rating (NRR) of the HPD. However, attenuation is highly dependent on individual-specific HPD fit. Prediction of an individual's attenuation depends on the accuracy of the measurement system and the variability of attenuation o...
